The Girl Gang Brings Safe Space For ADL Women

Alexia Frangos

We’ve all felt the pressures of social media at one time or another, whether from trying to upload the perfect selfie, get that perfect lighting, or just coming up with a witty-but-not-trying-too-hard caption. For teenage girls especially, this pressure to obtain a perfect self image is at an all time high, and founder of The Girl Gang Wellness Danielle Demourtzidis knows this for a fact.

With Danielle’s background in counselling and Bachelor of Psychology, she understands exactly the kind of headspace some girls and women can find themselves trapped in, trying to ‘fit in’ on social platforms and in real life.

That’s why Danielle founded The Girl Gang Wellness workshops – to create a safe, welcoming space for girls and women to empower each other, while discussing the trials and tribulations that is being a woman in 2018. The workshops are about educating and inspiring these girls and women in any circumstances they might be going through in life; from school pressures to relationships, work matters to hormonal changes.

Danielle says “We focus on building the coping mechanisms needed to deal with stress, anxiety, self-esteem, body image and more”. The Girl Gang Wellness workshops are aimed at girls aged 13 years and over and will be held monthly at various locations around Adelaide.

A support group like this is exactly what girls and young women in Adelaide need, especially in an overwhelming environment where we see Instagram influencers boasting images where their skin is strangely smooth, makeup is always professionally done, and not a hair out of place (meanwhile there’s about 300 photos that look identical to the uploaded image).

While most of us are guilty of this, myself included, it’s important to find a group of likeminded people who you can discuss these issues with – it is integral to our mental health to be able to open up about your doubts and anxieties, because someone in the group may be feeling the exact same as you and is able to offer support.

Danielle plans to expand her workshops to eventually cater to women of all ages and offer a program that supports open communication, self-validation and encourages positive relationships.

Sounds like a workshop you’re interested in? Danielle will officially be launching The Girl Gang Wellness on June 3rd with headlining guest speaker, Insta-famous personality and 2017 Cosmo Woman of the Year, Elle Ferguson, who is no stranger to social media pressures.

Elle says “It is so important to talk about what you are feeling and going through. You have to build a support network that you can rely on and this is what I love about The Girl Gang Wellness Workshops - it's a safe place for teens to realise they aren't alone”.

Come to the event and feel the support of so many inspiring, talented women at Palace Nova Prospect Cinema, Sunday June 3rd from 1-4pm. You can purchase your tickets here.
