With classic leather barber chairs juxtaposed alongside a colourful ape graffiti mural, Apes and Capes is classy barber studio on Walkerville Terrace with a contemporary twist.
Co-owner of the Apes and Capes, Shoyab Ali grew up surrounded by family members who were old school barbers. Exposed to the art of male grooming at such a young age, he finally learnt and mastered the craft while he attended University. Now with his three-month-old studio, Ali enjoys giving top-quality cuts while chatting away to customers.
A quick scroll of their Instagram gives you a glimpse of the immaculate fades and trendy hair patterns Ali masters in.
There are three main priorities behind the brand of Apes and Capes: to provide high-quality men’s haircuts, a space where customers can leave everyday life problems at the door and to overall, encourage conversation.
The whole ambience of the studio reminds you of a modern home, where customers can watch some FIFA while waiting, and then later indulge in a deep conversation with the staff.
“One of the most interesting parts of being a barber is to hear a person’s unique story and how their journey has led them to my doorstep,” Ali says.
Littered with ape iconography throughout the store, the studio also sells its own array of t-shirts and hoodies.
