This Is Radelaide's Top Six: Local Gift Stores

Georgia Brass

With Christmas fast approaching (15 sleeps and counting people), many of you would have/should have started thinking about what to get ya Mum, ya Dad, ya sis, ya Gran, ya uncle, ya dog…and some of you may be coming up short. What do you buy when you’re told ‘surprise me’? What do you get when you’ve already got them every gift you can think of? Or worst of all, what do you bring when you’re told not to bring a thing? #favourites… And what do you do if you want to get them something a bit special, a bit unique, a bit more personal?

Well in my experience and opinion, you go to one of these six locally run gift stores in the city and let them help you out!

1.       Have you met Charlie?

Have you met Charlie? is a gift store that opened in May 2014 through a project called Renew Adelaide (an initiative that helps launch new businesses by giving them an unused space rent free to help revitalise a shopping precinct). It’s a beautiful shop that stocks items that appeal to a wide audience, from home-wares to jewellery, designed and made by independent artists. Have you met Charlie? is a small business supporting other small businesses, making their wares available in the real world retail environment, creating a unique shopping experience for customers who regularly return year round.

Find this store at Shop 25, Regent Arcade Adelaide, South Australia & 5 Jetty Street Grange, South Australia.

2.      Relove

Relove is not a gift store per se, but rather a store filled with items that would make great gifts. From home-wares, to fashion, children’s accessories and skincare, there’s something for everyone. Relove is a non-commission store purpose designed to assist local small businesses in making a profit from their passion and products. Through Relove, over 65 South Australian independent creatives control what they stock in store and how they promote it, set their own prices, and keep 100% of their sales. This also means customers avoid paying inflated prices set by regular retailers - what a win-win!

Find this store at 16 Ebenezer Pl, Adelaide SA 5000.

3.       Presence

An added bonus – they provide free gift wrapping, a God send at this busy time of year! Presence’s store presentation is warm and bright, making it an inviting place to stop and shop – the punny store name is worth the visit alone!

4.       Bauhaus

Bauhaus is a local gift store providing an array of beautiful fashion accessories, jewellery, furniture and homewares from all over the world (think countries such as Mexico, Spain, India, Morocco, and Indonesia). They also support local South Australian designers by stocking an extensive range of their products. The store is styled as a chaos of culture, but never fear, the atmosphere is calm, making it a perfect place to be when you’re suffering from Christmas stress. They also offer gift wrapping! See Bauhaus for unique and quirky gifts for a boho babe in your life.
