What's On This Bastille Day

What's On This Bastille Day

Alexia Frangos

Bastille Day, one of our favourite international holidays is fast approaching, so we've comprised a unique list of places to check out in Adelaide this year.

This day isn't just about eating your favourite crêpes or scoffing down some brie, it marks the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, by mad Parisian crowds. This act alone demonstrated that commoners wouldn't accept the absolute power of the monarchy – thus began the French Revolution, which led to the French Republic as we know today. So in short, Bastille Day is France's Independence Day, but enough about history... let's talk about what's going on this Friday, July 14.

Adelaide Central Market

One of our favourite spots in Adelaide, the Central Market will be celebrating Bastille Day in style, by hosting an all day program jam packed with free French inspired events and showcasing their scrumptious range of pastries, breads, smallgoods, truffles and of course, cheese!

Eating a wheel of cheese? It's easy briesy.

From a pop-up crepe bar by Market Bread Bar, to free cooking demonstrations with Le Cordon Bleu, there’s lots to see and do for lovers of French cuisine and cooking. The program will also feature a free tasting table of speciality French products, screening of the Tour de France, French champagne tasting, performances by Louise Blackwell Quartet and free activities for kids, including cupcake decorating, a balloon giveaway and face painting.

If you're after an excuse to stay 'til late, Jamface Central will be hosting a Parisian Crunch Club at 6pm, so you can immerse yourself in a full Parisian experience with a six course French menu, curated and cooked by Adelaide's own Poh Ling Yeow. This event will be $60 per person with limited seats, so book yourself in - visit the Adelaide Central Market website for more info!

Madame Hanoi

A go-to spot for after work drinks and quickly becoming one of the best fusion destinations in Adelaide, Madame Hanoi at Adelaide Casino is going big this Bastille Day. We're talking 5 courses of French Cuisine, with Madame's signature Vietnamese fusion, plus live entertainment that is calling your name. Book your seat at Madame Hanoi's Vive la France this Friday night for your choice of a 6pm or 8:45pm sitting, that'll have you saying Ooh La La at every dish that comes your way for only $75 per person.

The menu includes grain-fed beef tartare, Murray River pork, seafood bouillabaisse, roasted baby chicken and blood orange bombe Alaska for dessert, plus a glass of Coriole Prosecco on arrival – let's just say, the French know what they're doing. To book, call 08 8218 4166 or email
