Young Adelaide artist Maria Kharitonova creates beautiful illustrations fuelled by her vivid imagination. Operating under her brand name Marus Illustration, Maria’s creative spark and playful details will leave you feeling joyful and inspired.
Like many artists, Maria has been creating art from a young age. She says, “art has been a life-long passion of mine.” Having studied art in Saint Petersburg, Russia before moving to Adelaide, Maria asserts that her passion for art has been growing for years, and is now completing her Masters of Visual Arts.
Maria’s works are undeniably magical – a touch of the ethereal and otherworldly is present in most of her creations. “I like illustrating parallel universes…every image has a narrative behind it,” she explains. “I think people should focus more on nature and mindfulness rather than everyday things.”
Maria chooses to depict her art primarily through illustration as “it is quite versatile” as a medium. “I am a very visual person, so it’s just the best way to express myself,” she says. When asked if there’s a favourite piece of art she’s created, Maria admits “I am so emotionally attached to every piece I create!” However, a stand-out piece for Maria is Falling (pictured below). “It’s about going through a portal, both physical and emotional.”
Maria is taking steps to follow her dreams for the future, telling us “I am hoping to be a full-time independent illustrator at some point, and maybe publish a children’s book.”
