808 Threads: Adelaide's Newest Clothing Hire Boutique, With A Difference

808 Threads: Adelaide's Newest Clothing Hire Boutique, With A Difference

Alana Trezise

If you wear clothes larger than size 10, I bet you've had trouble fitting into some of the dresses stocked at Adelaide's current clothes hire boutiques. How about over size 12? Speaking from experience, you might as well not bother stepping into one of these stores at all. Sadly, there is a gaping hole in Adelaide's dress hire scene, where women from size 12 and up are completely forgotten. Well, that was until Adelaide's newest hire boutique 808 Threads launched a week ago.

Founder Alexia Frangos believes that every woman should feel beautiful, no matter the size or body shape. The idea of 808 Threads was sparked when discussing with a friend how frustrated she was with a few hire boutiques, only stocking sizes 6 to 12. She says, "as a size 12-14 I was finding it hard to fit into the small selection of dresses on offer at these boutiques, and could only imagine how hard it would be for girls curvier than me to hire out clothes." So, four weeks ago she started to conceptualise the idea, before launching as a business just last week.

"It's been exhilarating and absolutely incredible, I feel so lucky to have the best support system in my business partners, family and friends. If you told me 6 weeks ago that I'd be opening a hire boutique at the front of my house I would've said you're crazy, but look at us now," she says.

Everything from the name, to the logo, epitomises women empowerment and body positivity - a theme that can be strongly seen across 808 Thread's social channels and brand. The number 808 represents the curves of an hourglass figure, while also drawing inspiration from the Roland TR-808 rhythm composer, a revolutionary keyboard that changed the way hip-hop was made moving forward. The logo was designed by local artist Rachel Darling, keeping the talent home-grown and ideas within this empowering, female focused movement. The models featured across their social media channels and website are all local lasses, with real body shapes, curves and imperfections, showcasing how women really look in each dress.

Currently, 808 stock a wonderful collection of dresses that range from size 12 to size 20. "We stock an array of cocktail and evening wear for all sizes and we have dresses you can wear to birthdays, engagements and even weddings! At 808 Threads we aim to keep it real with our customers, so much so we’ve had genuine women of these sizes try on our garments to gain proper feedback about size, fit, style and comfort," Alexia explains.

"I just want women to come into 808 Threads and feel like they belong; I wanna see that smile on their face when a dress fits them perfectly and they're gonna feel sexy and beautiful wearing it. I personally struggle to find that at shops I visit, and I can't wait to fill the void for these women, I'm very excited to see 808 Threads take off".

When asked where Alexia would like to see 808 Threads in the future, the answer was clear - more body positivity and encouragement for women of any size to be confident and comfortable in their own skin. She says, "we want women to feel absolutely beautiful and ready to party after leaving 808 Threads. We want to be able to stock more and more sizes and eventually have a range that suits all women, but it will take some time to get there. I’d love to open a shop front one day with flexible trading hours, so our customers can choose their outfit when it best suits them, and perhaps have a resident makeup artist or hairstylist in store too! I think that would help a lot of women get ready for their night out when they come to pick up their outfit on the day. We definitely have big plans for 808 and we thank everyone who has supported us over the last few weeks."
