After the news that the Rhino Room would be demolished to make way for a new hotel, fans of the venue were understandably heartbroken. For 20 years, the Rhino Room have fundamentally symbolised Adelaide - it's basically a cultural icon. It's well-known for providing a space where emerging and established comedians, entertainers, DJS and artists can share their work with dedicated audiences. It may be the end of an era, but the team at the Rhino Room weren't going to give up that easily.
After securing funds for a new venue with a crowdfunding initiative (reaching over their target, yay!) the comedy club is migrating ~pun intended~ to 1/131 Pirie St. While they aren't officially closing up the original location until the end of April, events are beginning to be hosted at both venues. Head along to support the team and Adelaide's undying enthusiasm for the Rhino Room (both the OG and 0.2).
Friday, April 7th:
9pm - late: Transmission @ New Rhino
Transmission is Adelaide's indie night, otherwise known as a condensed version of Splendour In The Grass. Transmission plays the tunes of Joy Division, Vampire Weekend, Bloc Party, and take us back to the time where everyone simultaneously became emotionally invested in Arctic Monkeys AM album/leather-clad Alex Turner.
Saturday, April 8th:
9pm - late: Taking Back Saturday @ New Rhino:
Abbreviated by the regulars to TBS, Taking Back Saturday is a journey to rediscover the loves of your 12-year-old emo phase (except for those who it's less of a throwback and more like another day of opening your Spotify account.) TBS plays emo/pop-punk hits such as "Welcome To the Black Parade", "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies", and have a tradition of playing the screamo rendition of Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" (yep, it exists).
Saturday, April 15th:
7pm - 1am: Bring The Noise @ The Old Rhino Room
SA events organisation Bring The Noise are dedicated to hosting parties to showcase up-and-coming talent in the local music industry. Their farewell to the Rhino Room features Ollie English, Little Captain, Adie Haines, and Peachy Keen. To honour the iconic Rhino Room, the team of Bring The Noise are generously donating all funds to support the venue's big move.
9pm - late: The Best Of Both Worlds @ New Rhino Room.
We got the limo out front, and the new Rhino Room are hosting their first Disney party. Flashback to the early 2000's, where Jonas Brothers and High School Musical were the only things that truly mattered. Memorable past experiences have included 16 requests for 'What Dreams Are Made Of' and the Kim Possible Theme Song (which one of my co workers has set as her ringtone).
Sunday, April 16th:
9pm - late: Four Words @ Old Rhino
Just because it's Easter Sunday, doesn't mean you have an excuse to not paint the town red.
Saturday, April 22nd:
7pm - 9pm: Adelaide Comedy @ New Rhino
9pm - late: NIGHTCALL @ New Rhino
Self-described as a combination of 'Spring Breakers' meets 'The Bling Ring' (but decidedly less morally questionable), Night Call is DJ night playing pop, RnB, hip-hop, rap, and whatever "trash" is. Consider it a night where Amanda Bynes (post rehabilitation) meets Lindsey Lohan (past and current), and remember the key word is "North West."
Saturday April 29th:
9pm - VERY late: Goodbye Rhino Room @ Old Rhino
Celebrate the legacy of the OG Rhino Room one last time.
Old Rhino Room: 13 Frome St
New Rhino Room: 1/131 Pirie St.
