Gin lovers of the world — particularly Adelaide — the time has come to unite.
Gin can be a harsh mistress, with sour, herbal notes that can turn off even the most gung-ho clear-spirit aficionado, a delicate approach is key for novices and veterans alike.
Punters who've braved the storm and taken the time to get to know gin, know that it loves them right back. Whether you're the protagonist of George Orwell's 1984, a sultry side-woman in Casablanca, or just keen for something different, gin is the perfect accompaniment to a warm winter fireplace.
That's why we've compiled a list of some of the best bars in Adelaide to sip down the sour spirit, in celebration of all its herbal infusions, for World Gin Day this Saturday, June 11.
The Howling Owl
13 Frome Street
Arguably one of Adelaide's premiere dedicated gin bars, The Howling Owl cocktail bar is home to over forty small batch gins from around the world, including their own Kangaroo Island Gins infused with native botanicals.
The bar is hosting an official event for the momentous day, which will include:
- A lesson in making your own gin, in a "Bootlegging Gin Master Class" with Jon Lark from Kangaroo Islands KIS Gin Distillery
- A Gin Tasting Board, full of South Australian gins
- Hand picked garnishes available at the Hendricks Bar with fresh fruits, herbs and spices
- A gin Wheel of Fortune, with punters able to score free Gin & Tonics
- Happy Hour specials from 7-8pm
Thrift Shop Bar
Situated in Waymouth Place, the folks at Thrift Shop Bar are set to celebrate the day by providing you with a cozy night in full of free snacks, as well as an eloquent selection of boutique gins from around Australia and the world.
158 Hutt Street
Bar Torino will be hosting a fully articulated Gin Degustation
Starting at 1.30pm you will be treated to 6 exquisite Gins from around the world, artfully matched with accompanying tapas to satisfy your taste-buds.
Unfortunately the event is already booked out — keep an eye on the venue's social-media and call-in on the day to see if you can snag any free spots that come up!
Hains & Co.
23 Gilbert Place
Yelp's Adelaide Community Manager Anita D. recently popped Hains & Co on her list of favourite places to grab a cocktail in Adelaide, with a humble position at the top of the list.
The bar is home to a host of local and international brands including Settlers Gin, hailing from McLaren Vale and mixed with specially matched tonic, Young Henry’s Noble Cut Gin from New South Wales, made using native pepperberry and bush tomato for a unique flavour, and Four Pillars from the Yarra Valley.
Don't be too humble though, you may just find your cocktails served to you in a crystal goblet.
The Stirling Hotel
52 Mt Barker Road
Not in the city? Not a problem.
To celebrate World Gin Day, The Stirling Hotel will be offering delicious $10 Gin Martinis, and $10 Negronis all day.
Off The Record:
No official 'world gin day' event, but worth visiting
Situated down the unsuspecting lane-way of Peel Street, Maybe Mae is home to an elaborate but charming speak-easy cocktail bar interior, hidden away through secret wooden doors that truly keep the prohibition vibe alive and vibrant.
Bank Street Social
If prohibition-era speak-easys are your jam, Bank Street is the one to polish off the night with.
Situated just a short walk away from Peel Street's Maybe Mae, the bar will have any punter ready to put on the latest Glen Miller record while, slinging back a hard glass of hard to find spirits and cocktails.
Home to one of Adelaide's largest cocktail menus and mood-setting aquariums, Fumo Blu is a must for anyone ready to sip down a properly crafted cocktail, inclusive of gin or not.
11 Leigh Street
One of Adelaide's original small-bars, Udaberri sets the tone right immediately with their carefully crafted selection of fine wines and cocktails to enjoy the start or end of a night with. Their gin menu is extensive, with each gin being perfectly matched with fresh botanicals.
