So what's your flavour? In music I mean. Rock? Jazz? Electronic? Acoustic? Or maybe a little Scandinavian Metal? Okay, what about a gig on the classic Adelaide Trams? Still nothing taking your fancy? Not a problem, Umbrella Winter City Sounds has you covered. (Was that a pun?)
Launching on July 15 and running through to August 7, Umbrella is set to showcase live music in a way that is sure to have something for everyone. With over 200 performances at 60 different locations (so far), Adelaide's festival season is no longer a summer occasion, and rightfully so, Adelaide has so much more to offer!
Lisa Bishop, General Manager of Music SA says:
"Adelaide has a rich history of establishing world class events using a grass roots approach, for example Adelaide Festival, the Adelaide Fringe, Tasting Australia done even Tour Down Under.
Umbrella Is no exception to this tradition; Music SA has commissioned 17 emerging music entrepreneurs to create live music experiences in line with their own artistic visions and hopes to use this model to grow a thriving festival and industry."
With so much going on, choosing a few favourite gigs to attend is always going to be hard so, here are a few recommendations to get you started:
The Tram Sessions, 15th July - 7th August
Exactly how it sounds, Tram sessions originated in Melbourne and now it's Adelaide's turn to experience shows whilst on the go. Aiming to bring a little excitement to the boring winter commutes, if you can't make it to any other events, this could be the event for you.
The Coconut Club, Sunday, July 31st
Taking an abandoned city space and transforming it into a 'tropical music oasis', this location is then kept secret until the very last minute, intriguing to say the least!
Pop Punk Party Time, Saturday, August 6th
Keeping with the obscure location concept, Pop Punk Party Time will take place on the 7th floor of the Wyatt Street UPark. Featuring a bunch of band's and DJ's, you can guarantee this will be a loud, gritty and entertaining event reminiscent of the 90's.
Guitars in Bars, 15 July - 10 August
Okay, so the last on our list isn't actually a singular event rather a mini-festival in itself. Guitars in Bars is part of the Adelaide Guitar Festival and involves a stack of different acts across different genres. You can find out more here.
If nothing has taken your fancy so far, there's karaoke for the kids, a public lounge room for electronic music, Root Down hip-hop festival, events at the zoo and even a show at the old Glenside Hospital!
