Mad March is well and truly over, and you might believe that winter can get stubbornly gloomy and uneventful here in Adelaide. The soul-shaking cold encourages us to hibernate indoors and black seems to be at the heart of our winter wardrobe. We think winter needs some jazz—both literally and figuratively. We’re envisioning a little glitter, a lot of sass, and enough edge to keep you out of the house. Luckily for us Adeladians, the annual Adelaide Cabaret Festival is here to once again liven up our city this June.
From the 10th-25th of June, the Adelaide Festival Centre will host the internationally-recognised festival for the 16th year running. With 173 performances from 470 local, national, and international artists to choose from, this year’s program is bound to shake off your winter blues.
Headlining this year is Dita Von Teese with her show Burlesque: Strip, Strip, Hooray! Committed to creating adventurous art, the American cabaret queen will be redelivering her most famous routine of stripping in a life-size martini glass that is encrusted with 250,000 Swarovski crystals. If that doesn’t sing pure class, we’re not sure what does.
The festival offers an array of entertainment that appeals to audiences of all ages. A new festival year brings two new collaborations with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, featuring the entertaining Tripod in This Gaming Life and Frank Woodley in The Composer is Dead.
This year’s comedy acts are expected to offer the best political satire yet, particularly from hysterical duo Jon Brittain and Matt Tedford in their show Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho. Though the laughs won’t stop there, as there is plenty of slapstick, clowning, and musical comedy from other performers on the menu also.
There’s certainly no need to get post-Fringe withdrawals this June. The show must go on—and it does. With everything from comedy and musical theatre to vaudeville and anarchy, this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival has you covered this winter.
