‘Veganism is not a phase’, vegans everywhere will say in response to suggestions that this lifestyle is the newest, coolest fad diet. If you’re on platforms such as Instagram, you’ll most likely be aware of the colourful Nikes, leggings, and beautiful people that seem to go hand-in-hand with the #vegan life.
If you’re having food envy from these babes, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.
With local social media personality ‘Freelee the Banana Girl’ eating 20+ bananas a day (true to her name), it’s comforting to know that the average Adelaidian vegan doesn’t have to venture too far for a hearty, plant-based dish.
You will no longer be scared to tell your Italian aunty that you’re passing up her famous meatballs or the 5kg tub of ricotta she just brought home. Just bring her (and your closest pals) to these treasures and you’ll win them over in no time. Feel free to leave the active wear in the wardrobe.
Vego and Love’n It
One of the most underrated and under-the-radar vegetarian/vegan-only cafes in Adelaide. You’ll find it up a set of narrow stairs at 240 Rundle Street – look out for the sign with the moustache that will lead the way to food heaven.
Need a cheap-eat after a six-hour day at uni? Me too. Hop off the bus at your local Zambreros. Vegan burrito. Under $10. You can pay that in the left over change from last pay day. Psst, did you know the guacamole is free when you choose the vegetarian/vegan option? Praise the Guac Gods.
The Annex resides at 3 Waterloo Street, Glenelg, and is somewhat still of a hidden gem. With all organic food and some meat options, you can bring your carnivore friends and they won’t whinge at the menu. The zoodles, chia puddings and raw caramel slice are to die for.
RAW Conscious Eatery
While you’re at Glenelg, check out Chapel Street's newest café, RAW Conscious Eatery. A great mix of savoury and sweet foods and pressed juices to hit the spot any day of the week.
Bliss Organic Cafe
Fancy yourself a yogi? Bliss Organic Café down Compton Street is a must regardless of your answer. Pop upstairs to the Heart of Yoga studio to get a 10% discount at Bliss after a class. Here’s your opportunity to work that #fitfam caption and be the picture-perfect vegan. Bonus.
Sigh. All vegetarian/vegan ‘junk food'. Cheeseburger? A quinoa burger cleverly disguised as not-quinoa? Curly fries? Mac n cheese? Sodas? A great option for the younger generation, too. Sitting upstairs in Adelaide Arcade, it's a must. Warning: it’s absolutely crawling at lunchtime. Prepare for the masses or book ahead, but know that it’s worth it. We all need a binge.
Cherry Darlings Bakehouse
And of course, what list of Adelaide vegan deliciousness would be complete without Cherry Darlings Bakehouse? Enough vegan-only pies, slices, cakes and donuts to poke a stick at. 5 Aroha Terrace, Forestville hosts this slice of heaven.
With that balance, you’ll be able to show all your weird meat-eating friends how affordable, easy and delicious it is to be vegan, and that we vegans are just like them. Who’d have thought?
