With Uni starting back up this week, we’re all sleeping through alarms, making half-assed attempts at looking nice and drinking dangerous amounts of coffee. Last Sunday was a celebration of the latter, with the City of Unley’s Double Shot Coffee Fiesta showcasing 'everything coffee', at the Soldiers Memorial Gardens.
After enjoying the O-weekend celebrations a little too much (if that’s even possible), we were in need of caffeine and a place to relax. Double Shot Coffee Fiesta's Chill Out Lounge was the perfect place to enjoy a cold brewed coffee and take in the atmosphere. Wondering around the gardens, plenty of local cafés had turned up, each with their own popup stall, offering different coffee tasters, great displays of awesome baristas in action and a few mouth-watering sweet and savoury treats. In the middle of all this, Monastery Coffee Brew Bar were showing off different ways to brew coffee, which were the ‘holy crap' kind of good.
As the day continued, a range of African, Bollywood, Brazilian dance and musical performances took place around the gardens. All the while, the allure of the coffee based cocktails and other drinks available from the Unley Bar was building, as the previous night’s hangover from Fat Controller's Cosmos Midnight performance was lessening.
While all this was going on, the Western Region Barista Championship was being held over at the Unley Town Hall, each winner now with a chance to compete in the Australian National Championships in Melbourne this month.
The Barista Championship:
1st Place: Michael Munroe of Addison & Steele Specialty Coffee
2nd Place: Rie Moustakas of Black List Coffee Roasters came
3rd Place: Ashley Lyons of Sazón Espresso
Huhtamaki Cup Tasters Competition:
1st Place: Michael Raffoul of Monastery Coffee,
2nd Place: Gabriel Tan of Black List Coffee Roasters
3rd Place: Campbell Herbert of Monastery Coffee came third.
Western Region Pura Latte Art Championship:
1st Place: Andy Tseng from Pixel Coffee Brewers in Perth
2nd Place: Celeste Dixon of Bar 9
3rd Place: Joshua Hocking of C.R.E.A.M
Whilst it might be another year before Double Shot Coffee Fiesta returns, Bar 9 and C.R.E.A.M are two places you’ve got to check out for that next caffeine hit; they’re absolutely killing the Radelaide coffee game.
