You know you're a bit intense about food when you choose your house on its proximity to what you believe to be 'the best supermarket', but nothing shuts up critics faster than when the rest of world decides to certify it as such.
Owned by South Australian family, the Chapleys, Adelaide's Frewville Foodland recently bagged the 2016 IGA International Retailer of the Year award at the IGA Awards of Excellence in the USA last month. They were invited to compete on the world stage following their crowning of the IGA Retailer of the Year award in 2015.
The Awards of Excellence acknowledges independent supermarket retailers who operate at an exemplary, world-class standard. Superlatives aside, it's a serious certification: Frewville Foodland is not only Australia's best supermarket, but the best (independant) supermarket in the world.
This is because Frewville goes beyond your expectations of an ordinary food retail store experience. If there's a supermarket that has the power to make you feel genuinely valued and cared for, it's Frewville. Their motto, 'We love what we do', might just say it all.
'Our loyalty is to our customers and the community,' says director Nick Chapley. 'We will never replace service and staff with self-serve checkouts - that is my personal promise. Job creation is very important to us.'
The Chapleys family has recreated Frewville under its 'Adelaide's finest supermarkets' branding, adding unique touches including Mr Nick's, an attached kitchen and coffee bar, an in-store piano with regular performances by the talented Peter Hacquoil, and a frequent pop-up juice bar.
What's also important to the Chapleys is a hospitality service ethos and accomodating to their growing foodie community. Their incredible range caters to many different diets and lifestyles, offering niche grocery items, extensive brand lines and often exotic or unusual products that are seldom found in any other supermarket in Adelaide. For gluten free, lactose free and refined sugar free customers - and those damn vegans like myself - they're an absolute godsend.
A haven for customers and the environment alike, Frewville is also Australia's first certified organic supermarket, a huge achievement for organic consumers, producers and the organic industry in SA.
'It's a proud moment for us as a family and a business to be recognised internationally for doing something we love to do most and know that our success derives from our customers trusting us to deliver on our unwavering dedication to quality, brands, community, jobs and customer service,' says director Spero Chapley.
Whether Frewville's about to be your new local or not, there's no denying they know how to put the super in supermarket.
