O Come All Ye Ideas: RADL's Ultimate Guide to Christmas

O Come All Ye Ideas: RADL's Ultimate Guide to Christmas

Alexia Frangos

Shiny tinsel all around, sweet smells of candy canes, Love Actually on the telly, and the faint sound of carols everywhere you go; yep, Christmas is well and truly here. This year at RADL we decided to be extra generous by giving our faithful readers the scoop on where to get the best pressies AND what's on this silly season! Almost every year we all get stuck on what to do during the holidays and what to give our loved ones let's be honest we can't get away with another dodgy fragrance kit or overpriced box of assorted nuts.

SHOP TIL YA DROP:

Deck The Malls

One of the worst parts about Christmas shopping is having to search far and wide for good deals while getting through crazy ADL traffic. Instead of spending 12 Days of Christmas driving from store to store, just make one stop at Westfield Marion, Tea Tree Plaza or West Lakes to make your Chrissy shop so much simpler.

When it comes to gift wrapping some people have a gift (get it) but others are useless at the task *raises hand* - so why not leave it to the experts? For a gold coin donation you can leave your gifts with Westfield while you finish your shopping, and return to a beautifully wrapped present, with your donation going straight to the Salvation Army. They will also match every dollar raised so I guess it's good to be a crap-wrapper!

When it comes to shopping in malls it's easy to drown in the sea of people - this is where Westfield saves the day. Go shopping at the times that suit you, because all three outlets will be open Sundays from 9am 'til Christmas! Don't forget their yearly midnight stint, which is happening this Thursday, December 15th, with free events running all night.

If that doesn't suit ya, on Thursday, December 22nd Tea Tree Plaza and West Lakes will be open 'til midnight once more, and Marion will be one big non stop shop for 36 hours straight until 9pm Friday, December 23rd! Crazy right? You can literally go shopping for pressies at 3am, as long as you get out of your PJs first.

If you're up for a Father Christmas visit, all three outlets have Santa sitting pretty in his enchanting forest every day until Christmas Eve, so go and grab a photo with the jolly fat man whether you're with 6 year olds, or 26 year olds! For more information and ways to help make your Christmas easier visit Westfield.

WHAT'S ON IN RADL THIS CHRISTMAS

As is customary, Adelaide is hosting a variety of events in celebration of the festive season. Here are a few options that will bring out the holiday cheer in even the biggest Christmas Grinch:

Now Until Jan 2nd - Christmas Riverbank Display: One of Adelaide's staple Christmas events, if you've never attended, you're missing out. The Riverbank Display traditionally showcases both Christmas themed sculptures, such as the nativity and other much-loved favourites - Snow White and The Seven Dwarves, and Vulcan's Volcano. The event also has food and drinks, carnival rides and sideshow alleys. The best time to visit is at nightfall, when the sculptures are operating, and lit up.

December 09th to December 18th: Santa's Wonderland @ The Adelaide Showgrounds: Although this is likely targeted more to toward children, there's no reason that adults can't get involved. With ticket purchase, the event offers unlimited amusement rides, ice-skating, tobogganing, and snow pit play (we don't know what this entails, but we're thinking an intense snowball fight), as well as meet and greets of roaming characters, live performances, Christmas storytelling and you can even get your Christmas wish-list fast-tracked to Santa at the Christmas letter writing station.

December 11th to December 30th - The Lights of LobethalSouth Australia's best known Christmas lights display, every Radelaidian needs to make an occasion of it at least once. It's one of the only places in South Australia that entirely dedicates itself to being a shimmery haven. December 11 marked their annual Lighting and Fireworks Ceremony, where the town's lights were officially switched on.

December 16th to December 18th - Hahndorf Christmas Village: The famous town of Hahndorf is extending their trading hours to provide the ultimate Christmas shopping experience so you can find that unique gift for your nearest and dearest. Live entertainment will also be present.

December 22nd - Cable Kidz Christmas: Not everything Christmas has to be traditional. Featuring Cut Snake, the festivities are sure to be slightly less family friendly.
