New Year's Eve is a week away, and if there's one thing Radelaidians like to do, is bring in the New Year with a party. Here's a guide to what's on:
December 31st 2016/January 1st 2017
Transmission NYE Party: 9PM-4AM
Adelaide's much loved Rhino Room is hosting its annual Transmission New Years Eve event. Transmission features tunes of the (as succinctly put in "Ten Things I Hate About You") 'angry girl music of the indie-rock persuasion'. Well, Transmission is less angry girl, and more alternative beats from artists such as Joy Division, Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, and Passion Pit. So basically the contents of my iPod.
It's a $10 entry free, and drink specials include 4 shots for $20, and 2 cocktails for $20, and $5 lagers and vodkas until 11pm. I've personally never been, but my housemates assure me that the night is always a banger.
NYE @ Supermild: 7PM-5AM
Sausage sizzle included.
New Year's Eve - The White Party (hosted by Mary's Poppin and inthedark) : 8PM-4AM
Mary's Poppin', Adelaide's newest gay bar, will be hosting their first New Year's Eve celebration. Self-described as an 'eccentric hot spot', Mary's is owned and hand-curated by inthedark, Australia's leading LGBTQI event organisation, producing world-class events catered to the burgeoning LGBTQI population. With a company that's toured artists such as Joan Collins and Ru Paul's Drag Race Queens, any New Years' party with them is sure to be a hit.
Mary's NYE party is white themed (to emphasise a united front), and will feature all-night performances by Mary's Divas, the bubblegum 80's pop music that is central to Mary's vibes, and their typical modern twists on classic cocktails.
Tickets are $25, with guaranteed entry, and champagne upon arrival.
New Year's Eve @ The Moseley: 5pm-3AM
South Australia's best overall venue, The Moseley Bar & Kitchen in Glenelg are holding a NYE party that is sure to trump spending the night on the beach with a sea of sweaty humans. It's $20 entry from 5pm, with Absolut Elyx cocktails flowing, DJs across two levels and prime fireworks viewing spots on the balcony. Get in early to avoid the lines!
New Year's Eve @ Hacienda: 8PM-4AM
Adelaide's new favourite party destination is hosting its first NYE celebration. Replacing Apple, Hacienda is renowned for its weekends featuring popular artists, and artist v artist battle nights. NYE proves to be no exception, with Justin Bieber being the spotlighted musician of the event. As the Biebs is skipping out on his Adelaide tour (boo, hiss), Hacienda is bringing Bieber to Adelaide, through a selected playlist of his old and new hits (we're thinking a combination of "Baby" and "What Do You Mean?) If Bieber isn't really your thing, Hacienda will also be playing its usual pop, funk, and RnB vibes in between.
Entry is $10, but get there early so you won't get stuck in the inevitably long queues.
Not keen to spend NYE in the club? Well, there's always ...
NYE @ Elder Park: 6pm-1am
Adelaide City Council's free NYE event is always a good one to attend. The event includes live music, roving performances, kids entertainment (street theatre and activities), food stalls featuring global cuisines, and two rounds of spectacular fireworks.
Live music: Fresh 92.7 Jump Start Competition Winner, Mane (alternative), DJ Trip (electronica), Electric Fields Music (modern electronica and soul), Lazy Eye Band (blues), Germein Sisters (indie pop) and Local Revolution (afro roots funk.)
Performances: 7PM - Reuben DotDotDot (acrobatics), 7:45PM - Katie Wright Dynamite (juggling and hola hooping), 8:30PM and 10PM - Nick Nicholas (comedy, magic, and juggling), and Eloise Green (physical theatre with a twist.)
It's a non-smoking and non BYO event, although beverages will be available for purchase at beer gardens.
NYE @ Electra House: 7PM-2AM
Electra House's NYE party is now being hosted in their penthouse space. With purchase of VIP tickets, you will experience their premium beverage package, and gourmet table grazings. In their westside room, DJ Felicity Auckett will be playing favourite Electra dance tracks, and in the eastside room, DJ Tim Bos will be playing the sax over funky house tunes.
