Adelaide's live music scene is no stranger to a variety of off-kilter and generally 100% homegrown music festivals.
Punx Picnic is no exception, taking the "oi you" attitude of the DIY punk scene, and pushing it to the limits of the words Do It Yourself, complete with a small shanty-town of generators, food trucks and bands.
The Punx Picnic is an annual event held in the grassy surrounds of Bonython Park for the past five years each summer — all inclusive and free to enter, the event takes place in a small section of the park, with the rest otherwise open as normal to the public.
Bonython Park is no stranger to alternative music, having hosted Soundwave for a number of years in its existence in Adelaide, however the do it yourself ethos of the hardcore-punk annual picnic pushes the envelope to new levels; there's a strange but comforting juxtaposition watching a family ride push-bikes along a footpath, only metres away from thundering breakdowns and screams from a band whose entire discography lasts for about ten minutes, and is available on cassette for some reason.
This year, on Saturday December 17th, the Punx Picnic will feature upwards of nine bands, including some interstate acts, as well as a variety of screen-printed shirts, vego/vegan friendly food, and a quirky "alternative" fundraiser to boot.
"All money raised this year will be going to a political prisoner in Mexico," the Picnic's Facebook event reads.
"Our mates Eliza and Clare have been hanging at an Anarchist space that has been running for 16 years in Mexico City,"
"[One of the organisers] is out on bail, so safe for the moment, but there is a serious threat to his life if he has to serve a jail sentence. He needs money for lawyers and international solidarity." they say.
