Spread The Local Love This Christmas

Caitlin Tait

It’s true. Christmas is only a handful of weeks away, but there is no excuse for leaving your shopping until the last minute. Christmas Eve in Rundle Mall will leave you something akin to the Grinch. We both know it. So to make sure it doesn’t happen, we’ve got you covered.

Finding gifts for your mum, brother and distant cousin who you only see once a year can be hard. This is where shopping off the beaten track helps. We’ve got some seriously cool places hiding in our sweet city. You’re guaranteed to find super funky things that you wouldn’t even dream of finding in a department store.

Got a pen and paper? Start taking notes.

HOME SUPPLY

Supplying you with everything you could ever need (or didn't realise you needed) in a home. Pillows, throws, succulents, art, jewellery... Just to name a few. You could almost knock off everyone in one spot with the goodness Home Supply are spreading.

COFFEE BY THE BEANS

Everyone has a friend or family member who is obsessed with their daily brew. Coffee By The Beans is a holy spot located in the Western suburbs, proved here. While feeling warm and fuzzy about supporting a fantastic local company, you'll be able to pick up a bag of beans in 250g, 500g or 1kg amounts. You may as well pick something up for yourself, too right? It's only fair.

Where: 3/394 Henley Beach Road, Lockleys

OH DEER SUGAR

This is not a drill. I repeat: not a drill. Oh Deer Sugar pitches itself as a 'the non-edible bakery', which sounds semi-disappointing, but trust us, this stuff is brilliant! Cruelty-free body products that rival all your favourite brands, if only for the gorgeousness of it all! Body scrub smelling of sorbet, bath bombs shaped as donuts, and chocolate bars of soap. Wrap these goodies up for the sweetest people in your life.

CLARITY RECORDS

For the hipster in the family. Your dad has brought out his turntable from the 60's and won't stop playing the Bee Gees? Get him something new to spin. Maybe even a Bowie tee? Dads can be cool. Promise.

URBAN COW STUDIO

Heaven. Whether you're into some serious art, after some groovy ceramics, or want to snag a classic 'Heaps Good' shirt - this is your sanctuary. Urban Cow Studio is a big supporter of shopping and supporting local, giving homegrown artists a place to show off their goodies and reap the rewards. Think of your eclectic aunty's jewellery collection. This is where to get her gift. Or maybe a heartfelt piece of art celebrating love? Check.

SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS

This option is almost too easy. Find your favourite local artist on social media and ask for a commission piece! Babes like Laura Gentgall and Isabella Whittaker do commission work - just make sure you give them notice. No one needs to rush or panic this Christmas. With the amount of incredible talent Adelaide holds, you're sure to find something that mum wants to hang in that empty spot of wall just above the couch. You know the one.

Start early, support local. Think outside the box.

We know Christmas isn't a competition, but if it were - you'd win with these gifts.
