5 Highly Anticipated Albums Dropping This May

5 Highly Anticipated Albums Dropping This May

Zoe Walker

May is proving to be a HUGE month for new music. That being said, please keep in mind that this list is obviously not fully exhausted and is simply a concise list of just some of the most highly anticipated albums. Apologies if your favourite band/artist hasn't been included!

BEST COAST – ‘California Nights’

Everyone’s favourite summery indie rock band, Best Coast, is releasing a very appropriately named record - California Nights. The album drops officially on May 4th and follows their breezy Fade Away EP from 2013. The first single from the album, ‘Heaven Sent’ has been playing on our radios for the last couple of months and acts as a promising taste of the upcoming album. Best Coast seem to be maintaining and improving their trademark jangly beach vibes that have the ability to take you to a warm beach even on a cold winter day. They also continue to deliver epic guitar solos that are sprinkled throughout their songs. For those of you who were lucky enough to score Splendour In The Grass tickets this year you can catch these guys who will undoubtedly be putting on one hell of a show.

TWENTY ONE PILOTS - ‘Blurryface’

If the hip-hop/indie pop fusion is your thing (how could anyone not like that genre?!) then Twenty One Pilots have got you sorted. This duo from Ohio combine simple raps that emphasise their lyrics and highlight a serious talent for rapping. Tyler Joseph has been blessed with such a beautiful and unique voice that it’s hard to stop listening to him. Blurryface will be their second signed album following their debut and critically acclaimed hit LP, Vessel in 2013. Over the past few weeks we’ve seen a surprising number of official videos posted on YouTube for singles on the upcoming album. Check it out:

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE – ‘How Big How Blue How Beautiful’

People are just dying for this one. It’s been about three and a half years since we heard a studio album from the beloved British indie-rock band. But they are well and truly back as we heard the explosive hit single earlier this year, ‘What Kind of Man’ and more recently another huge single, ‘Ship To Wreck’. The album is expected to embody the characteristic emotional rawness that we’ve come to love about the band. Florence Welch said in a press release, “…the new album became about trying to learn how to live, and how to love in the world rather than trying to escape from it, which is frightening because I’m not hiding behind anything but it felt like something I had to do.” May 15th can’t come soon enough.

HOT CHIP – ‘Why Make Sense?’

The UK synth-pop group has been around for a while so it’s exciting to hear just how much they’ve evolved over the years. Why Make Sense? will be their sixth album and is set to be released on May 18th.  So far we’ve heard singles, Huarache Lights and Need You Now, both of which have a rather dark, emotional undertone. What can be gathered from both songs is that the album will be somewhat of a coming-of-age moment for the band and (to steal lyrics) ask the question “is the youth just getting old?”

THE VACCINES – ‘English Graffiti’

English Graffiti will be the third studio album from UK indie rock outfit, The Vaccines. It’s hard to believe they only formed in 2010 because they feel like they’ve been around forever. This is probably because their music has been so influential for indie rock culture. The album will mark the band’s first release in around two years, which is partly why it’s become one of the most anticipated albums of 2015. With high expectations, fans have been promised one of their biggest songs yet. Singer, Justin Young has said in regards to the new single, Dream Lover: “I think that’s the biggest song we’ve ever written…it’s like a monster to me in my head.” Well if that doesn’t get you excited I don’t know what will. These guys will also be appearing later in the year at Splendour In The Grass.
