Oz Comic-Con: A gathering of like-minded people, fans, retailers and stars ditching their usual weekend attires to don the costumes of their favourite pop-culture characters. While OzComic-Con is widely known for the unique opportunities that it brings die-hard fans (celebrity meet-and-greets, advance screenings, gaming products and merchandise, etc) it is also famous for its awesomely dressed crowds.
Walking through Adelaide OzComic-Con, it is no strange thing to see a Storm Trooper hanging out with Superman, or notice Goku making eyes at you over a bucket of chips in the food hall. After an hour or so, you’ll see more Pokemon characters than you can throw a comic book at and plenty of guys that bulk up to dress as Wolverine rather than to attend Stereo’s. Apart from all the elaborate costumes and highly serious devotees, you will also notice a great sense of security and welcoming. This is a place where people be who they want to be, where they encourage each other to go all out, where ‘freaks and geeks’ wear these titles with pride. But what is it that makes people dress up? What is it that makes them spend months- sometimes years- on costume design and production? What is it about this area of pop-culture that gets people so excited? This reporter wanted to go deeper into this eccentric and accepting atmosphere, to find the people behind the costumes. These are the humans of Adelaide OzComic-Con.
