The Flinders Street Market: Crafty treats and healthy eats

The Flinders Street Market: Crafty treats and healthy eats

Rachel Darling

If there is one thing us Adelaidians know about our marvelous city, it’s that we have some absolutely fabulous markets- and The Flinders Street Market is no exception!

Every Saturday and Sunday, The Flinders Street market is up and running, giving Adelaide’s creative-folk a place to sell their wares, as well as a place for the public to sample them. Each week is unique with different stalls and sellers setting up shop.

Run from a big blue warehouse that you really can’t miss, this market has the under-cover advantage to operate through wind, rain or shine and is full to the brim of goodies you can only find in a good market. Soy candles, brick-a-brack, art works, fun fabrics and crocheted crafts - this place is the best big blue warehouse to be in on a weekend.

Apart from offering unique handmade treasures and bargains, what is any good market without the traditional market-dwellers coffee and cake options? The Flinders Street Market did not fall short yesterday with vendors offering spiced teas, coffees, macaroons and for those feeling a little more health conscious on their Saturday morning, there were nutritious vegan desserts offered by The Healthy Little Lady stall. New to the market, business owner of The Healthy Little Lady, Melina Scholz says the market atmosphere was a relaxed one. ‘It is very cosy and there is a good sense of community,’ she says, ‘plus the customers really loved the raw snickers cheesecakes and bliss balls!’ (and who wouldn’t?!)

So there you have it - a market full of knick-knacks, forgotten treasures and crafty creations complimented by coffee and guilt-free cake. Healthy vegan lemon and lavender cheesecake anyone?
