Exxopolus by Architects of Air at WOMAD 2015

Alexandra Lekis

Architects of Air offered an exclusive addition to WOMADelaide 2015 with their luminarium, Exxopolis, an imaginative inflated art installation.

This towering illuminated sculpture was ours to explore at this year’s WOMADelaide. As we marvelled at the beauty of the light and colour concealed within, we were able to wander without a guide (getting lost multiple times) to discover the different sections and designs. With such a calming atmosphere, and gently cooled air-conditioned alcoves, it was no surprise that we felt inclined to lie-down on the soft plastic alongside other admirers and gaze up at the ceiling to admire the colours and lights as they transformed above us.

A particularly beautiful dome was the centrepiece, ‘Cupola’, which had a stained-glass window appearance which was said to be inspired by the circular space of the Chapter House of Southwell Minister.

Exxopolis was the end result of six months of hard work from a talented team, as well as involvement from local community groups. This entire luminarium was made from a delicate hand-cut plastic less than 0.5 mm in thickness which allowed natural outside light to shine in and bedazzle us. Community groups contributed in making the perpendicular style windows with small pieces of plastic to create the stained-glass effect in the ‘Cupola’.

Exxopolis was a magnificent installation with 10-metre domes which soared high above us providing magical moments of tranquillity amidst the excitement of WOMADelaide. We hope that Architects of Air return to WOMADelaide again in the future with another stunning installation.
