Six weeks ago, popular Adelaide nightclub hotspot, Tijuana Showgirls announced via its Facebook page that it would be closing the doors. Of course, this was met with a great big sigh from a large portion of the Radelaide partying community. ‘So now where do we go?’ followed by, ‘they can’t be serious, something new must be happening there’.
Well, fast forward to just a couple of days ago and Tijuana has announced a revamp of their Hindley Street location, fit with a new name to go by: ‘Go Go Lady Boy’.
The change in name has set social media on fire, with some users slamming the rebrand as ‘racist’, ‘ignorant’ and ‘transphobic’.
Following these comments, one of the Tijuana owners Alexander Kleut has come forward saying that they are sorry for the name change and although it has caused controversy, ‘it was not their intention’.
‘We just wanted to rebrand ourselves and get a bit more theatrical and get a bit more Fringe (Festival) like…that was our main focus,’ he says.
As the festivities of the Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide Festival and Mad March are now coming to a close, it is time for the party crowd of Adelaide to turn their attention back to what is on offer all year round.
With more bars, pubs and restaurants opening their doors to the public of Adelaide than ever before, it is paramount for long-stayers in the business to continue to bring excitement and change to their brand, something which the guys behind Tijuana seemingly aim to do through their rebrand.
‘It’s the way it is and we are apologising for that, but once people come in and have a drink and get amongst it, they will see there is nothing there that is directed to anyone to offend them’, Mr Kleut says.
Doors to ‘Go Go Lady Boy’ will be reopening tonight from 9pm. Go go and check check it out for yourself.
