Gone are the days where gym attire was some old daggy t-shirt, and sneakers that you've owned since the 1800's. For the past few years sports wear has been on the rise and has bridged the gap between the incredibly comfortable clothes you wear to exercise, with the clothes you wear on the street.
Not only sports brands, but many commercial fashion labels have released collections of sports wear that is not only functional but also looks damn good. I think we can all agree that leading the pack is the new Finders Keepers X Fit range that debuted last year. Maybe you’ve seen at on Instagram, maybe you’ve seen it at your local Goodlife/Anytime Fitness/Jets, but either way it’s a pretty cool way to look while you sweat it out. As Kate and I both agreed, sports wear is about looking good to make you feel good.
Behind the designs is the incomparable Kate Anderson – head designer of Finders Keepers. Safe to say, she’s a fairly admirable young woman. She’s been the very successful head designer of the label since 2010, releasing a casual 11 collections a year. To add to that, she was named Cosmo’s Fun Fearless Female Designer last year. Sorry, did I mention she’s also added radio commentator to her CV?
Sports wear has been on the rise in recent years both inside and outside the gym, what made you decide to design a range of sports wear?
The active wear and leisurewear is a huge booming market. I’m a massive fan of exercise and healthy lifestyle so it was a perfect fit (pardon the pun) for Finders Keepers.
Do you think what a girl wears while exercising affects how she feels about it?
I think so; when I got back into exercise I bought a whole new gym wardrobe. When you look good you feel good, and I think when you’ve got the right clothes to wear you feel excited to get out of bed and do it rather than when you have old daggy clothes to wear.
FK X Fit not only looks good, but it functions well. What kind of science is behind making an active wear line with performance fabric?
I’m still learning that side of it as we go. There are a lot of performance fabrics so it’s about finding the right one for the Finders Keepers Girl. The FK girl probably isn’t going to run a marathon or train 3 hours a day – she might do Pilates, Bootcamp, Kayla Itsines… that kind of thing. It’s all about having fun with exercise and having a good time.
Do you think it fits with who the Finders Keepers girl is?
Yeah definitely! She's fun, playful, and just a good time girl. That’s what it’s all about, and we’re not here to preach anything. We’ve just started with a nutritionist to help with things like healthy snacks and hangover cures, so it’s all about how exercise can fit into your lifestyle.
What do you think of sportswear as a trend on the streets?
Active leisure is a huge trend and I don’t think it’s going anywhere. It’s been filtering down from the easy wear trend – things like soft dresses – and not having to put too much effort into what you’re wearing. The active wear trend is amazing for that because you can basically wear whatever you want whenever you want. Gym wear isn’t just for the gym anymore – it’s for the weekends and day-to-day, like mixing a sports crop with a singlet and boyfriend jeans. It’s a lot of crossing over, which is perfect for Finders Keepers as it’s a brand you can wear day into night.
You’ve been head designer of FK since 2013 – how can you sum up the job so far?
I don’t know where to start! I’ve been working on Finders since 2010, so it’s been a crazy ride and it’s grown a lot. We’ve done a lot of travel, which has been amazing. We went to London, Paris and Germany last year and we saw Finders Keepers in Harrods – that was a surreal moment. When you go over there and see it in store you realise how global the brand is and the effect it’s having on the market. I’ve met so many great people and learned so many things – I’m learning every day. It’s been phenomenal.
Who are some of the highlight people that have worn your clothes?
Jessica Alba was a big one, as well as Kayla Itsines wearing FK Fit. Cara Deleveigne wore Finders a while ago and that was awesome.
Through your achievements and opportunities, as well as hard work, what advice would you give?
It is definitely a lot of hard work; it’s not an easy ride at all. I didn’t get said yes to every time, so it hasn’t been all flowers and rainbows. I would say to just keep going, and have that mindset that you’ll get there.
My advice is meet and talk to whoever you can. Networking is the most powerful tool you can have. If you’re good at it and you know how to do it it’s your most powerful tool.
Can you pick a favourite collection you’ve created?
It’s hard because you do have an emotional collection to every collection and every range, after 4 weeks you go onto the next one so it’s pretty fast. I think my favourite piece ever was from November the Harvest, the Yesterday Dress.
When it’s time to start creating a new collection, where do you start?
Finders Keepers is a trend-based commercial brand, so we look at the runways and see how we can adapt that to more of an easy- wearing brand. We try to decipher how the runway trends can translate to the Finders Keepers girl. We pick prints and fabrics, talk about ideas, and then design the range around that.
“Networking is the most powerful tool you can have”
You were named Fun Fearless Female Fashion Designer of the year by Cosmo– what do you think makes a female fun and fearless?
I think it’s being yourself and having confidence in yourself, knowing who you are and having respect for other people and what they do.
What makes Adelaide Radelaide?
We’re definitely giving the other states a run for their money. I know people from interstate who come at this time of year and are so impressed – the Royal Croquet Club and all the pop up bars… they’re doing such a good job of it all. We never had that before and we’ve got such a great opportunity to make it better than what other state’s do.
What are your top spots?
I love Clever Little Tailor, Ettica, Osteria and Coffee Branch.
How have you enjoyed your radio segment on Hit 107?
When I started I had no idea what it was and what I was getting myself into. It’s a weekly segment, and talk about what’s going that week, whether it’s fashion trends or a red carpet that week. I love going into someone else’s working environment and seeing what it’s all about.
