Being Barbarella: Review

Amy Clark

So you’re probably wondering, who the hell is Barbarella? I myself was thinking the exact same thing as I arrived at the Producer’s Bar last night for British comedian, and aspiring ‘sexy girl’, Elf Lyons’ Fringe show (if I’m being honest, I was also wondering, who the hell is Elf Lyons?). However, after the 50 minutes of insane hilarity that is Being Barbarella, I knew only one thing; that both Barbarella, and Elf Lyons, are absolute legends.

For those who don’t know, Barbarella is the intergalactic cult heroine made famous by another legend, Jane Fonda, in the 1960’s. Whilst fighting crime, and having her way with whoever she damn well pleased, Barbarella is a badass bitch saving the world, one mindblowing shag at a time. She’s also the inspiration behind Elf’s critically acclaimed one women stand up comedy performance, which is kick ass by the way.

Tackling a broad range of topics – from sexual experimentation, how to be a ‘sexy girl’, teenage awkwardness, tinder hookups, erotic literature, and the innermost feelings of sharks, Elf takes you on a comedic rollercoaster which will leave you feeling a bizarre but bloody brilliant combination of aroused, confused, and empowered. You will also learn many seemingly useless facts, which will make you king at any quiz night.

The best way to describe the show, and Elf’s comedic style would be: the funniest, most intimate, and sexualised word vomit you’ve ever experienced…on crack. Really, Being Barbarella is not unlike a conversation between Lorelai and Rory from Gilmore Girls, except its just Elf talking with the audience, and herself. Her fast paced wit and energetic showmanship slaps you right in the face over and over again, leaving no time between lols to catch your breath. Elf is immediately awkwardly lovable, and you can’t help but be totally engaged and seduced by her infectious energy, and amazing accent. Passionate, opinionated, and charismatic, Elf’s on point observations will have you literally crying with laughter. Legit, it happened. Elf may also be the best storyteller of all time.

For a truly great female comedy show that’s not only legitimately funny, but also seriously relevant and on point, Elf Lyons’ Being Barbarella is well worth a look.
