Tell us about yourself and how your label came about?
After graduating TAFE (fashion design and technology) in 2011, I began by making and selling bits and pieces through a friend’s store- Mai Loui (at that stage on Hutt st). My first full collection was Spring Summer 2013/14 and was the collection that won me AFF emerging designer.
When did you decide you wanted to become a fashion designer and why?
Growing up I was always interested in fashion and would spend a lot of time reading vogue and putting together outfits. After finishing school I went the uni route however followed my passion a little later on.
What was the inspiration behind launching your own fashion label?
It was a natural progression after graduating Tafe to start working on my own range. In fact I didn’t really consider much else!
How would you describe Georgia Guy?
Georgia Guy is a women’s wear label – designed and manufactured in Adelaide, with a focus on clean wearable clothes that have a classic feel to them. Being the patternmaker and manufacturer, I also put emphasis on fit and quality.
Where do you find inspiration from when designing?
I am always open to inspiration, observing people and things around me, as well as spending a lot of time online checking out street style/fashion blogs and keeping up to date with what is going on in the fashion world. My ideas for a range tend to flow after buying the fabric for the season, the texture, feel and drape and structure of fabric really dictate to me the direction I end up going with.
You won the coveted award as the best emerging designer in 2013 AFF. What has been your highlight as a fashion designer since that point?
Winning that award was a huge deal for me and gave me the drive and encouragement to keep on with the label and focus on developing it. Since then highlights have been being involved in the Adelaide Fashion Festival as an established designer and getting more exposure for my label.
What is your design process like when creating a collection?
My design process begins with a few key ideas and a general feel for the collection. I then start the fabric buying which spurs ideas to flow from there. My last two collections have developed as I’ve been patternmaking and sampling which allows me to see what else the collection needs to balance it all out.
Who is your style Icon and why?
There are quite a few people I admire for their style including Giovanna Battaglia, Solange Knowles (her wedding dress was incredible) and Victoria Beckham….. and many more!
If you could style one person in Georgia Guy, who would it be and why?
I adore Mindy Kaling and would love to see her in something of mine, she always looks amazing, is strong, independent and intelligent.
Any exciting plans for the future that you would like to share?
I have a maternity range in development (for purely selfish reasons as I’m currently pregnant) and my winter collection is soon to be released - a sneak preview was shown last Wednesday at Fashion Concept. It’s going to be a busy year!!
