Girl Asleep: Adelaide goes Hollywood

Paige Kerin

Adelaide is good for many things; arts festivals, food trucks, sport ovals, and as it turns out, making movies. Filming has commenced on Windmill Theatre’s first independent feature film Girl Asleep, and is being made right here in SA. Locations in Bonython Park, Blackwood Forest and Panorama will feature in the film, so chances are it will look nice and familiar. More than 80 cast and crew will work together to make the film directed by Rosemary Myers and written by Matthew Whittet. The cast includes some pretty talented young Australians like Bethany Whitmore, Eamon Farren, Harrison Feldman, Danielle Catanzariti and Amber McMahon.

The cast includes two special Ade-ladies who aren’t new to working eachother; Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Imogen Archer (who we were lucky enough to chat to a couple of weeks ago). Tilda and Imogen displayed performances well beyond their years in the poignant and moving film 52 Tuesdays that premiered in 2013. When I chatted to Imogen I definitely got the impression she’s excited to be working with her friend again.

What’s it about? Set in the 70s, Greta Driscoll is enjoying her 15th birthday party when she’s suddenly frozen in the spotlight after an uninvited guest arrives and steals her favourite possession. We then follow her journey into a unknown world where she explores the bewildering brutality of adolescence. Mmmm, dem feels.

Producer Jo Dyer said that “Adelaide is a fantastic city to produce an independent feature film, with its state-of-the-art facilities, talented crew, exceptional actors and diverse yet accessible locations”.

The play has had rave reviews, so no doubt the film version will be amazing. Girl Asleep will premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival in October this year.
