Review: Melbourne Cup Day at Morphettville

Review: Melbourne Cup Day at Morphettville

Amy Rowley

I’ve been stuck at work on Melbourne Cup Day more times than I care to remember. Not so this year. For those of you who were desk-bound, here’s a taste of what went down at Morphettville Racecourse yesterday.

With over 250 screens throughout the course, Morphettville was the best place to be for all of the local and interstate racing action and information. The trackside location held an elevated sense of excitement and authenticity and the scene was peppered with buzz and beauty.

The Endeavour Homes Fashion Pavilion with MC Mark Aiston was a highlight, featuring a performance by Rachael Leahcar from The Voice, slick fashion parades by Burnside Village, and luxury prize giveaways in the Moet & Chandon Golden Bubbles promotion.

The Kirin Lounge made a debut at Morphettville this year, free for patrons in the General Admission area.

The Face of the Cup, Kate Freebairn interviewed the Fashions on the Field finalists on the trackside stage with charm whilst glamorous contestants struggled against the wind to keep their fascinators in place. Popular radio personality and FoF judge Jodie Oddy from Mix 102.3 made light of the sudden gusts as she joined Freebairn in announcing the winner. “You hold my hat and I’ll hold yours” she quipped.

The FoF winner Melissa Barnes happens to have her own millinery business – Adorn Collection – so finding a hat to suit her dress was not a problem. Nor was finding a dress, apparently.

“It’s a Clover Canyon dress. I actually found it on Ebay and the rest of the outfit just flowed from there!” she said.

Melissa credits the colours in her dress combined with stark black accessories as the winning formula that gave her outfit an edge.

Melissa will now represent the SAJC in the State Final of Fashion at The Races to be held Sportingbet SA Derby Day at Morphettville on Saturday 2 May 2015, where 16 finalists will have the opportunity to win the major prize of an Alfa Romeo Mito valued at $24,500.

The winner of the Best Dressed Male category was Luke Townsend. Kelly Willsmore and her partner Bojan Maslo took out the prize for the Best Dressed Couple.

To round up the day, Guy Sebastian and his band lit the stage in the general admission area.

If you are able to escape your office duties next year, gather your peers and let your hair down via one of SAJC's delightful Cup Day Packages.
