After 25 years of friendship and numerous nights of kicking back with glasses of wine, founders of A Fanciful Notion Tricia and Tanya decided they would embark on their own wine making journey.
A Fanciful Notion is a label that aims to bring a human element to their business. Their motto and overall aim is to create "wines as interesting as the people who drink them". Tricia and Tanya have taken their love for wine and created a brand that captures South Australia's people, their talent and their stories.
For the launch of A Fanciful Notion's two wine labels Whimsy and Quiet Revolution we were invited to attend a tasting held at The Black Addition. This cafe (and hopefully soon to be restaurant) was turned into a mini art gallery featuring photography, fine art and commissioned graffiti from local artists. The owner of the cafe offered us four rounds of glasses of wine, each one coming out with just enough time in between to really enjoy the generous servings.
The launch had an impressive showing of guests all lost in the ambience of the art and tasty foods provided by Lunch Bunch. After a quick speech from Tricia and Tanya we were left to mingle and taste the four wines.
Two stand out wines were from the Truth In Ink from the Whimsy collection. This one off two part collection celebrates all that is unique by featuring local residents with beautiful tattoos as the labels' models. Part one is a 2015 Sangiovese bronze medal winner which offers sweet notes of vanilla and berries with an after taste of spice and acidity.
Part two of Whimsy is a 2016 Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir. This multi award winning wine has a perfect balance of texture, neither being too dry nor sharp with flavours of cherry and spice.
The next collection is truly close to Tricia and Tanya's heart because they wanted to create a line that would be vegan friendly. Yes to my surprise wine is made with animal byproduct. The White wine is a refreshing blend of apples, pears and blends well with hints of citrus. The Red is a blend of Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Mourvedre, a truly powerful blend of smoky plum and ripe berries.
I happily sipped on my glasses because I knew I was drinking wine with a purpose. A Fanciful Notion is a socially conscious brand with profits going towards local charities. The White wine from Quiet Revolution supports Freedom Hill Santuary, a charity which provides homes for abused and neglected animals. The Red supports Harvest Fair a meal delivery service which offers flexible employment and skill development opportunities.
My experience in one sentence: I'd like to wine but I have no complaints.
