Situated on the North-Western rim of the Adelaide Parklands, Red House Shop & Café is breathing new life into the historic North Adelaide Railway Station. Standing as one of Adelaide’s most long-loved buildings since the 1850’s, the Railway Station now houses a quaint vintage café, showcasing antique wares for sale, and offers a one-way ticket to an all-day breakfast paradise.
With only one step inside the café’s doors you will be taken back to the era of mismatched furniture from the 70’s, vintage teak dining chairs, retro fairy lights, and train timetables from the early 1900’s.
Though the café is infused with historical vibes, owner Emily Pescod has successfully transformed and rejuvenated the building into a vibrant brunch spot, whilst respecting and maintaining its original character. The old-school ticket office now houses the cash register and an array of baked goods, the former waiting room is currently filled with enough dining tables to comfortably seat up to 70 customers, and the old cloak rooms now accommodate a vintage shop. Adding to the authenticity of the building’s heritage are the number of trains that rumble past every half an hour on the Gawler Central Line.
Specialising in all-day breakfast, Red House offers a menu that is simple and home-style. Seated in front of a toasty refurbished fireplace or in the outdoor courtyard surrounded by succulents is where you can find yourself indulging in the following dishes (just to name a few).
- Florence Eggs: Poached eggs and spinach blanketed in hollandaise sauce on toasted ciabatta. To complete the dish, you have a choice of bacon, smoked salmon, or haloumi. It’s such a stomach-wrenching decision, we know, but with such diligently-paired options and for $16.50, you really can’t go wrong. We ordered the haloumi and a side of mushrooms that were drizzled in balsamic vinegar and had our tastebuds experiencing pure bliss.
- Breakfast Burger (Special): Keep your eyes peeled for this special—a breakfast burger packed full of flavour that is sure to cure your brunch-time hunger. Double bacon, fried egg, Swiss cheese, rocket, caramelised onion, and house-made relish on a toasted bun for $16.50. We’re still dreaming of this dish.
- The Infamous Red House Big Breakfast: This option proves that Red House is all about variety, customisation, and putting your tastebuds first. Here, you are in complete control of your order as you can select five different food items to create one hell of a personalised breakfast for only $17.90.
Though the various brunch dishes take centre stage on the menu, the deliciousness and house-made cuisine doesn’t stop there. Take our advice and turn your brunch date into an experience complete with an afternoon dessert. The classic coffee and cake combo is simple, yet heavenly. With a lemon baked cheesecake, banana-coconut cake, and a flat white in a bucket on offer, Red House is what dessert dreams are made of.
Wander through the building to the shop and browse through the vintage dresses, boots, handbags, and quirky items that are for sale. Red House Vintage has been established for years and is commonly recognised at the Gilles Street Market. However, the antique wares are now showcased at a fixed location for you to enjoy endlessly.
Peruse the retro products after you’ve devoured the house-made cuisine at Red House Shop & Café.
