Art Gallery Food + Wine: The Art of Food

Alexia Frangos

The Art Gallery of South Australia provides us with culture from all over, bringing in new scenes and ideas, attracting all walks of life and never compromising quality... and Art Gallery Food + Wine are no different. We take an insight into how they have mastered not only the art of food, but the art of hospitality.

Art Gallery Food + Wine have been open for almost 3 and a half years, making the space a casual and comfortable eating venue suited for everyone from ages 5 to 85. The space is beautiful on the inside with a rainbow of colour, and the outside is just as peaceful. AGF+W Owner Nykilja Butt says many city-goers are attracted to the space, as there aren’t many places where you can sit outside and avoid traffic noise and pedestrian-crammed footpaths.

Just your average Wednesday lunch?

Nykilja has been working at The Gallery for so long, she’s basically part of the artwork! Her energy and enthusiasm for quality food, outstanding service and zest for life is refreshing and great to see in a business owner. By talking with her, you can tell she loves where she works and the wonderful staff have the same vibe.

Local and fresh produce is so important to their agenda, as they “work closely with growers like Patlin Gardens from Gawler". "We love using seasonal produce and aim to change our menu 4 to 5 times a year,” Nykilja says. They also work with award-winning small goods producer San José for their meats, Kicco coffee for the best kick and flavour in beans, and use bio-dynamic eggs from Kangaroo Island to produce their everyday freshly baked muffins and cakes in-house. Just sit back, relax and immerse yourself in the culture Adelaide has to offer while sipping on a fantastic cup of Joe and biting on a fresh blueberry muffin #bliss.

Every few months, you can walk into AGF+W feeling like you’re in a different place. Why? They work closely with the curator of each new exhibition in The Gallery to coincide their decor and side menu. They take inspiration from the current exhibition and bring it into the restaurant, so you can have a meal with friends while 'tasting' the exhibition, and even recognise some similarities between the artwork and the food you are eating.

The menu at AGF+W is always interesting, as they don’t stick to a particular cuisine, but try to incorporate and fuse recipes from Asia, Europe and Australia. We got to taste one of the ‘exhibition foods’ on the AGF+W side menu, the 'KIS vodka and watermelon snow cone with mint syrup and Persian fairy floss' which has a resemblance to the cone heads artwork of artist Nell from Magic Object.

The icy freshness of the snow cone, soft sugary taste of Persian fairy floss, subtle and sticky mint syrup and crunchy bite of the yellow melon was totally sensational. A beautifully executed and fragrant dish, it’s a wonderful dessert that won’t have you feeling rich in the stomach. Enjoyed with a simple light glass of South Australian Pinot Gris and you’re in heaven.

Wacky and wonderful watermelon snow cone!

AGF+W have recently teamed up with Mlkman delivery service, gaining quite a notable following in Prospect and around the CBD, which works to their advantage. “Many days we’re at capacity, so Mlkman is great for our regulars to enjoy our food at home or in the office even on busier days.” Nykilja is hoping “if our license goes through for selling wines, it may carry over to Mlkman delivery, serving food and wine as a package deal.” Umm how bloody cool is that? I can hear the Hallelujah chorus in the background already.

It's as quick and easy as it gets, you can even track your food in real-time with only $6 delivery from the best local restaurants, with no minimum, you can order and eat lunch in under 30 minutes! Download the Mlkman app on your smart phone and check out their website to see how it all works. RADL readers get 15% off your purchase from AGF+W this week when you use this code: thisisagfw

AGF+W are open 9am - 5pm everyday excluding Christmas Day. They dedicate the first Sunday of each month to children with free arts and crafts, along with many other kick-ass events throughout the year. Check out their Facebook page and website for more information!

Huge thanks to Nykilja and the AGF+W team for their wonderful service and kindness, we'll be back.
