Mushroom Month Menu Launch at The Highway

July is one of those months where you're either snuggled in post-uni slumber, participating in dry-July for as long as possible (4 days down yass!), or stuck in a food coma from an overdose of pies, pasta and let's be honest, anything above 60 degrees. If you're looking for a new taste this July, head down to The Highway Hotel for their annual Mushroom Month, where the menu is suitable for anyone that loves a good 'shroom paired in a cosy pub environment. 

The Highway's Mushroom Month encases a variety of dishes where mushies are the hero ingredient. Many types of mushrooms are included from the little old button to the fist-sized portobello, suiting each dish on the menu with flavours that pack-a-punch. 

We had the pleasure of attending another successful menu launch at The Highway where our tastebuds were satisfied and our dignity disappeared by wanting to lick every plate we finished, and snagging some sneaky extras on the side - it was too good not to! 

Mushroom Month 2015 Menu:

Entrée:

Field Mushroom Soup with crème friache and crispy shallots
A smooth soup to start with, warm and tasty is what you want and it's what this soup provides. The field mushroom gives depth to the dish with the crème friache cutting through, creating a new soup for the soul.

King Brown Salad with parsnip skordalia, hazelnuts and watercress
A light, textured salad that'll have any health-nut or coach potato wanting more, this salad is for everyone! Great as an entrée to share with mates or as a light meal if you're feeling peckish. 

Main:

Wild Porcini Gnocchi with white wine and gorgonzola cream sauce
Yum yum yum! This crunchy-on-outside-soft-on-inside gnocchi will have all the Nonna's wanting the recipe. Paired with soft, delicious porcini mushroom and addictive gorgonzola cream sauce, this dish was the winner of the night. 

Shimejji and Confit Duck Leg with pink oyster murshrooms and pea veloute
The Highway love their meats, and what better to go with mushroom than confit duck. Yum on all levels, even the mashed peas had us begging for more.

Portobello Burger on a brioche bun with onion rings, cheddar, truffle aioli, mustard and chips
Not big on meat but miss the feeling of a juicy burger? Well here lies your next vego burger fix! This one is as filling as an Angus Beef burger, but healthier and has 10 times more depth of flavour. The combo of brioche bun, mustard and onion rings is ingenious.

Dessert:

Button Mushroom and Chocolate Espresso Cake with meringue and truffle ice-cream
To our delight and sheer surprise, this dessert was fantastic. Who knew mushrooms could play a flavoursome and rich role in cake? This phenomenon will have us trying to replicate it at home; even the truffle ice-cream was gourmet on another level. The whole dish was a mixture of textures, flavours, and will tick all the boxes for a real dessert lover.
