When the words 'Krispy Kreme' and 'expanding' are used together in a sentence, the subject is often waistlines, rather than retail space. However, now we're talking about real estate, so get excited.
Because the Adelaide doughnut wars are on.
That's right - doughnut giant Krispy Kreme have a new location, opening 2nd May in the Adelaide CBD, with renovation started on the corner of Grenfell St (which you might know as 'where the bus is') and James Place, where colourful lolly haven Blackeby's Sweet Shop is situated, or for those of you with an exercise regime, LuLu Lemon (in which case, why are you reading this article?).
The new Grenfell St location means that the hike there and back between Uni lectures lends itself to enough calories burnt to justify a sweet treat, but it's far enough away that it won't become breakfast, lunch and dinner during exam time. I am however, calling it now - there will be at least one person in the computer lab during swot vac week with a tray of the goodies unabashedly chowing down. Wait and see.
Whilst the addition of Krispy Kreme to the heart of our CBD means breakfasts of coffee and doughnuts in the cold of winter, it also means that within a very, very small distance, three doughnut giants will sit: The afore mentioned Krispy Kreme, international doughnut bridesmaid Gourmet Glaze and the other side of City Cross food hall is the place with the best chalkboard in the business, Please Say Please. PSP were pioneers of the Cronut movement in Adelaide and though aren't a doughnut joint per se, their sweet treats pair amazingly with their terrifyingly good coffee and super cool vibe.
There's no paleo to be had here, no 'i quit sugar' or #cleaneating. This is sugar wars, plain and simple and the only winner really, is the collective winter weight of us Adelaidians as we try to figure out who reigns supreme.
