2013 Chef of the Year, Duncan Welgemoed, has set a date for the opening of his new restaurant named Africola. November 12 will see doors open to the South African themed restaurant and bar, that will use traditional cooking techniques. “We will use a lot of smoke, a lot of ash and fire,” Welgemoed told Rip it Up.
Africola will showcase food, booze and vibes from South-African born Welgemoed’s hometown.
“It’s going to be all things to all people, you’re going to have a restaurant element- and the experience offered of a kitchen menu- but people can also go there and smash booze and grab a snack and watch the action. Also with the outside, I’ve always wanted to open up that restaurant, so I’ll open the doors and have sick outdoor seating and just have everything flow out, which is going to be cool,” said Welgemoed in an interview with Rip it Up.
French-inspired Bistro Dom has received numerous awards since its opening, including being recommended in the Australian Gourmet Traveller 2015 Restaurant Guide. Head chef of Bistro Dom Melody Herbert, will move over to Africola as head chef with Shane Wilson taking over at Bistro Dom.
The all-star venture will add some South African spice to the already energized corner, cosying up to neighbours Botanic Bar and Golden Boy, just in time for summer.
